Types of fly

There are thousands of type of flies but only a few are pest around the home. Three of the most common flies are the housefly, the vinegar fly and the drain fly.

Housefly

The housefly is one of the “filth fly” species, so called as they live and breed around garbage and manure. This is why they carry a wide range of diseases. When they fly from these breeding sites to your kitchen, landing on food preparation surfaces and food, it’s easy to see how they can potential pass on these diseases to humans. When you understand that they are continually tasting surfaces and defaecating when they land, it becomes clear why it’s important to keep them our of our homes and businesses.

Keeping garbage in bags and placed in bins with well fitted lids eliminated both a food source and breeding site. Well fitted fly screens are also essential.

Vinegar flies, sometimes called fruit flies, are a small brown, slow flying fly, then can be found in both domestic kitchens, as well as commercial kitchens and bars. As their name suggests, they like fruit, particularly rotting fruit, which act as both a food source and breeding site.

They are very capable in finding and breeding on very small amounts of fruit or even spilled liquid (such as the beer in bars). The key action to preventing a vinegar fly problem is to ensure you have a strict cleaning regime and make sure you get into all the crack and crevices, as well as under appliances.

The drain fly is a hairy grey, slow flying fly. Due to its hairy appearance it is sometimes call the drain moth. As its name suggest it does tend to hang around drains. It breeds in the slime found in drains.

Preventing a drain fly problem is about keeping drains clean. Regular use of a drain cleaner will eliminate these breeding sites and greatly reduce the chances of a drain problem occurring.

Fly Control FAQ

How to get rid of houseflies?

If you have a housefly problem, it’s important to locate all their breeding sites, so they can be eliminated or treated. Picking up dog and cat faeces and not using chicken manure on gardens will also eliminate breeding sites. A professional fly treatment will then provide lasting protection.

Almost everyone will have a fly spray aerosol under the kitchen sink to deal with the occasional fly. Whereas you can dry and spray the fly directly, they are pretty quick and you maybe chasing the fly for a while. Fly sprays are better used as a space spray. Check out the instructions on the can, but closing windows, spraying in the air for a few seconds before closing the door and leaving the room is often the best option. This creates a cloud of insecticide which the fly cannot avoid.

To get rid of vinegar flies, it is essential to find and clean up the food or spill in which they are breeding. Some people will advocate the use of a home made cider vinegar trap. While these will trap vinegar flies, it won’t solve the problem. The reason you have a problem is because they are breeding elsewhere.

Drain flies breed in the slime inside drains. Thoroughly cleaning out the drains will eliminate the drain fly breeding sites.
