The Termite Pest Control process

At Go Pest we carry out all treatments to Australian standards. There are a 6 steps to our professional termite pest control treatment process

The first step is to carry out a complete termite inspection. This is important to determine the species, the scale of the damage, the termite entry points to the building and whether there were any particular conditions that made the property more susceptible to a termite attack. Sometimes we may carry out the inspection after Step 2, but before starting any treatment.

Annual termite inspections should be carried out anyway an it’s always worth keeping your eyes open for the signs of termites.

After we have discussed the various treatment options with you, we provide a written treatment proposal before starting work. This is an essential requirement – not only does it ensure you fully understand what is and isn’t included in the treatment, but it is required by all industry insurance companies.

Eliminate active termites from the building. This may take as little as a week through to several months. The time taken to control the termites depends on the species, the scale of the attack and the products used. Be assured we will recommend and use the best products for the situation to get the fastest result.

Once it looks like we have eliminated the termites it is important to carry out a thorough inspection of the whole property to confirm the building is clear of termites.

To help prevent future termite attacks and make the property less attractive to termites, any conditions around the home that makes the property more susceptible to termite attack need to be remedied.

This is also important in order to maintain any performance warranty of the termite management system that is installed.

Installing a termite management system provides protection from future termite attack.

Although step 3 eliminates termites from the building it is often not possible to confirm the nest has been destroyed and there may be other nests in the area. Both scenarios mean that without a termite management system in place, your home is susceptible to another termite attack.

The termite products we use...

There are two types of termite management systems; liquid termiticide soil treatments and termite baiting systems.

At Go Pest, liquid soil treatments are our preferred termite management system as they are always working to protect your home and assuming the soil is not disturbed by the homeowner, they last around 8 years. This technique uses liquid termiticide which is mixed into the soil around your property to create a treated zone. Termites that enter the treated area are either killed, preventing them entering the property.

It is important to realise that these treated zones prevent termites from gaining hidden access to your home, it doesn’t stop them building a mud tube over the treated zone. However, if they do this, they will be easily spotted and is one reason why annual termite inspections are required, even with a treatment in place. Indeed annual inspections are required to maintain any treatment warranty as they are required to check that the treatments hasn’t been compromised (eg. through gardening activities) and that the building remains free from termites.

As part of a Go Pest termite pest contro treatment you will get a free termite inspection 1 month after installation. After that, you will need to pay for your annual termite inspection, which is required to maintain any warranty.

Reticulation systems

When we carry out a soil treatment, some homeowners take up the option of installing a reticulation system. This is a system of pipes in the ground which can be pumped up with termiticide, which then slowly leaks into the soil. Although this adds a little bit to the initial treatment cost (to install the pipes), it saves money in the long term. When it comes to re-treat your home, we don’t have to dig up the soil, we simply re-fill the reticulation system. Reticulation systems can also sometimes add a bit of value to your home when you come to sell, so a good investment.

Sometimes due to construction design, soil type or owner request, termite baiting systems are used instead of liquid termiticide soil treatments.

There are two types of baiting systems:

1) Termite monitoring and baiting systems which consist of plastic bait stations containing wood, which are placed in the ground around the building. Any termites in the area are attracted to the bait stations before getting to your house. This activity is picked up by our termite professionals during one of their regular system inspections (at least 4 per year). If they do find active termites, an attractive termite bait containing a slow acting insecticide is added to the bait station. Termites feed on the bait taking it back to the nest where it is fed to the queen and nest mates. Over the period of several weeks / months, the nest is eliminated.

2) Termite baiting sytems. These are the latest termite protection systems, like Trelona, which we use here at Go Pest. These systems have bait installed from the start so they are working all the time to eliminate termites and termite nest from around your property.

FAQ - Termite Treatments

There is no such thing as the best termite treatment, only the best treatment for your property. As every property is different, it is important to implement the best treatment option for your particular situation.

The choice of treatment will depend on the building construction, termite species present, soil type, slope of the block, environmental conditions and  flooding risk. Environmental considerations and cost, may also be factors.

Sometimes more than one option may be suitable for your property. 

The cost of a treatment depends on a number of factors:

  • Construction type of property (concrete slab v brick piers)
  • Size of property
  • Depth of foundations
  • Soil type
  • Amount of hard surfaces around the property
  • Product choice

There are also difference between soil treatments and termite baiting systems. Soil treatments tend to be more expensive to install but cheaper to maintain. For baiting systems it’s the opposite – they are cheaper to install but more expensive to maintain.

Yes, it is theoretical possible for homeowners to treat termites at their home, but it isn’t advisable.

  • You are unlikely to save money – do you have all the necessary equipment and time to complete the job?
  • Do you have the knowledge about termite behaviour, product application and building construction to know you are applying the right product in the right way?
  • You are not insured. If you don’t apply the product and termites attack your home, not only have you wasted your money, but you will have to pay to fix the termite damage to your home which can be significant – it will not be covered by your home insurance! The pest control company does have insurance so if termites do damage the home after treatment, you are covered.
