The traditional owners of the area are the Dja Dja Warrung people. Early European settlers called the area Homebush, but to avoid confusion with the Homebush in Sydney, NSW, the name was changed to Junortoun in 1912.

Junortoun is primarily  a residential suburb surrounded by areas of bush, including the Wellsford State Forest. However, it is still only approx. 6 km from the centre of Bendigo. Junortoun is home to Lords Raceway, which holds both harness racing and greyhound meets.
