About Castlemaine
Castlemaine was “discovered” by European settlers in 1836, although it is the traditional land of the Dja Dja Warrung or Jaara people. It was originally called Forest Creek, before becoming Mount Alexander and finally Castlemaine in 1854.
Originally sheep farming dominated the area, but Castlemaine was to become one of the gold rush towns, with gold found in 1851 in Forest Creek. As the gold rush ended, other industries took over including woollen mills, breweries and iron foundries. The biggest employer today is the small goods company, KR Castlemaine.
Today, it is also a tourist attraction as a consequence of its gold rush history and has the oldest theatre in mainland Australia – the Theatre Royal, which was built in 1856.
